Family campsite fun

Fall/Winter 2024

Looking for the best camping games and toys for your family camping trip this fall or winter? Then we’re glad you’re here, because that’s precisely what we tested out and rounded up for you. Sure, it was hard work playing games and running around with walkie talkies and binoculars and bubbles and all, but we’re willing to do it for you and yours.

But before we talk about some of our favorite campsite games and activities, remember that you might not need to fill time spent in nature as proactively as you need to fill the hours at home. Who needs toys or games when you have trails and mountains to traverse, rivers and ponds in which to splash, woodland critters to spot, flickering fires to sit beside, and a firmament filled with stars on which to gaze?

Then, on the other hand, when moments of campsite boredom threaten, it’s good to have some of the best games for camping and outdoor fun toys and gear along. Because face it, those moments will happen, especially if rain, heat, or mosquitos keep you tent-bound or stuck in the cabin — that term “cabin fever” wasn’t coined for nothing, y’know?

  • game box showing Skillmatics Rapid Rumble Outdoors

    Skillmatics Rapid Rumble Outdoors

A game involving both trivia, fast thinking, and fast running, too, Rapid Rumble Outdoors is a perfect campsite activity. (Granted, we love this game for the park or beach or the backyard, too.) It can be enjoyed by kids as young as four or five (even though the box says six, trust us!) and is fun for kids of varied ages to play together. Parents can have fun too, of course, and may find themselves humbled by their quick-thinking, fast-footed kids, too.

  • yellow and purple game box of Spot It! Classic Card Game

    Spot It! Classic Card Game

This game may say “6+” on the packaging, but we have played round after round of it with four-year-old kids and had plenty of fun all around. It’s an entirely visual game with no reading skills or base knowledge required, so it’s one of the best games for all ages we have ever seen. And it’s compact and lightweight, making it perfect for the campsite or for travel.

  • a green game box of Pass the Pandas depicting dice and cartoon pandas

    Pass the Pandas

Another game that is entirely visual but does require a bit of strategic thinking, Pass the Pandas is a great game for families with kids of varied ages to enjoy together. And as all you need to play it are the handful of dice the game comes with, it is such a small game you can literally hold all of its pieces in the palm of your hand. Or the pocket of your jacket.

  • An orange game box for Qwixx Fast Family Dice Game showing enlarged green, red, yellow, and white dice

    Qwixx Fast Family Dice Game

This is a fun game for kids age eight-plus or so, or for younger kids with serious math skills. But frankly, it’s even more fun for teens and adults. When you play your hardest, this is a genuinely challenging, competitive game that big kids and adults will love. And again, it’s compact and highly portable.

  • A green box for Found It! Outdoor Edition with a yellow magnifying class in the center, clods scattered around and a rabbit in the bottom left

    Found It! Outdoor Edition

Found It! is a scavenger hunt game known and loved by families far and wide; this is the outdoor version of Found It, and it’s an edition your kids will love when they are out there in nature. They’ll be running all around the woods looking for things like something that falls from tree branches, something lighter than a feather, and so on.

  • a game box of Scrabble To Go showing a scrabble board in play

    Scrabble To Go

Who doesn’t love a good game of Scrabble? (OK, a few people out there, but they’re wrong.) This portable version of the classic word game packs down to be about the size of half a loaf of bread, but allows for all the classic gameplay and wordsmanship you love about Scrabble.

  • a lime green, yellow, and blue walkie talkie

    Midland X-Talker Walkie Talkies

Bright and colorful so they’re less likely to get lost, durable and water-resistant so they’ll last a good long while, and easy enough to use for even younger kids, these Midland walkie talkies are always lots of fun. And while they’re good fun and also quite affordable, they’re also not toys: these are highly capable two-way radios with a 20-mile range, 22 channels, privacy codes, and weather alert radio functions, so they are safety gear for hikes, paddling trip, and campouts, too.

  • an army green Nocs Zoom Tube Monocular

    Nocs Zoom Tube Monocular

Not only is this monocular smaller and lighter weight than most pairs of binoculars, but it’s also a lot easier to use. With a monocular, you can quickly get an eye lined up and the lenses focused, saving time compared to binoculars requiring dual focus adjustments. That ease of use is great for adults when time is of the essence and for kids for whom binocular use can be tricky in the first place. The Zoom Tube is perfect for the outdoor family that wants to get an up close look at birds, deer, or whatever else is out there, and without having to get up close.

  • two jars of bubble next to a cardboard refill station

    Bubble Tree Original Bubble System

The bubbles you’ll blow are nontoxic and environmentally safe. The bottles from which you’ll source them are refillable aluminum — also nice and green. And as for the quality of those evanescent little spheres themselves? Top notch. No immediately popping weak little bubbles here, these bubbles drift and whirl for dozens of yards, the kids laughing along in tow. And sometimes the adults.
